Temptation Wilderness

What tempts you more:
-Big, juicy steak cooked to perfection?
-Double chocolatey chip creme frappuccino?
-Being less-than-entirely-truthful on a tax return?
-Telling a supervisor what an idiot they are?
-Taking credit for someone else’s work?
-Remaining silent while someone else suffers?

Or perhaps it is something else entirely?

This week, our gospel story (
Matthew 4:1-17) picks up right where we left off last week. John baptizes Jesus, then Jesus is “led into the wilderness to be tempted.” It is a rather well-known story; one our culture loves — loves — to imagine, draw, paint, and film. We’ll take a peek at a couple examples as we wonder just who is this devil/tester/tempter/Satan?

We’ll also wonder:
•    What is significant about the temptations Jesus endures?
•    What difference does it make where Jesus is?
•    Why does Jesus leave Nazareth for Capernaum?
•    Why does Matthew quote Isaiah and call the area “Zebulun and Naphtali”?
•    How does anything from this dusty old story help us be better, more faithful disciples striving to transform the world today?

This Sunday, January 20th, Pastor Dave will wrestle with those ideas and more in his sermon, “Temptation Wilderness.”

All are welcome!

Be part of the discussion at our summer worship gathering on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome!

The Bible for Curious People - a Tuesday Morning Study

How did the bible come to be in the form we have?
Why are there so many different versions and translations in English?
What is the overall story of the “Old Testament”?

These are some of the questions we will explore together Tuesday mornings from 10:30am-12:00noon. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along. All are welcome. Classes start this week, Tuesday January 15th.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK 2 (JANUARY 22ND)
Read your bible’s introduction to Genesis. What does it say about when and why Genesis was written?
Read chapters 1 and 2. Listen for the poetry. But also make use of any notes in your study bible. How do the two accounts differ? How do they compliment each other?Try to step past this as a story of how the world began and consider what the stories say about why God created and how we are supposed to live in the world? What are we doing to be good stewards of all creation? How might we improve in that role?

PADS Gratitude
“Alone we can do so little.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH!” - Helen Keller

On December 18 and 19, 2018, Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC) served over 60 homeless guests at the Downers Grove Methodist Church.  Through food donations and volunteers who staffed the shelter, it took about the same number of faithful people from our congregation to accomplish this.  There were some “bumps in the road”, but we brought Christ to the homeless guests, and in our midst,  Christ was there!  THANK YOU!  YOU’RE WELCOME!

PLEASE SAVE THE FEBRUARY DATES:   FEBRUARY 19 AND 20, 2019.  A NEW SIGN UP SHEET IS IN THE NARTHEX.

Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to Woodridge United Methodist Church whenever you shop on AmazonSmile.
