The Ultimate Rinse Cycle

This Sunday we will embark on a journey of "all you ever needed to know about Methodism but was afraid to ask" starting with the sacraments.  We will reaffirm our baptism at both services while still serving communion at our first service.  We will talk about how important these sacraments are in our lives and for our faith journey.

Baptism could be considered "THE ULTIMATE RINSE CYCLE" when we look back at its origin.  As we look at the passage in Matthew 3 and see what goes on, we see the presence of the Trinity -- God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit -- at its best work.  What is more important in the life of a Christian than to know that we are "beloved".

Join us on Sunday at 9 or 10:30 a.m..  There will be baptism reaffirmation at both services and communion as usual at 9.  We have an open table and you have an open invitation!!!  ALL are welcome.

Be part of the discussion at our summer worship gathering on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

GC2019 Primer #1

As promised last month, today we begin a series of posts intended to get us ready for General Conference 2019 (aka GC2019) which will take place at the end of February in St. Louis. In some ways, this Special Session of the General Conference is a new approach. In other ways, it is the latest iteration of a conversation (or, perhaps more accurately, argument) that has been going on in the United Methodist Church for over 40 years.

This whole undertaking is rather "inside baseball", so apologies in advance for multitudinous UMC geekery. (Ironic, coming from me.) Read more
here.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know
Let's begin the year off in the right way!!!  Starting in January we will start a new series in our Wednesday night Bible study class and on Sunday mornings based on the book by Adam Hamilton entitled CREED, What Christians Believe and Why.  We will be offering this as an option for persons who are interested in becoming members of the church as well as everyone else who wants to learn more about what we believe as United Methodists.

JUST HAVE QUESTIONS:  We will try to answer them as best we can.
INTERESTED IN MEMBERSHIP:  Here is your opportunity in a non-threatening way.
WANT TO KNOW WHAT UNITED METHODISTS BELIEVE:  We will try to share that information as well.

A sign-up sheet is available in the narthex.  Beginning January 9th, join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. (dinner with the youth starts around 6:30) and on Sunday mornings in January.

The Bible for Curious People - a Tuesday Morning Study

How did the bible come to be in the form we have?
Why are there so many different versions and translations in English?
What is the overall story of the “Old Testament”?

These are some of the questions we will explore together Tuesday mornings from 10:30am-12:00noon. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along. All are welcome. Classes start this week, Tuesday January 15th.

ASSIGNMENT for WEEK #1 (January 15th)
1.    Find a study bible (if you need to borrow one, some are available in the narthex) and read the boring stuff at the beginning that most of us skip past — where the translators write about their process and their purpose. Different versions call this different things, such as: “To the Reader”; “About this Version”; or simply “Introduction.” What questions do you have as you read this?
2.    Read the pamphlet “How the Bible Came to Us.” Printed copies available in the narthex. Available online at
http://bibleresources.americanbible.org/resource/how-the-bible-came-to-us

PADS Gratitude
“Alone we can do so little.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH!” - Helen Keller

On December 18 and 19, 2018, Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC) served over 60 homeless guests at the Downers Grove Methodist Church.  Through food donations and volunteers who staffed the shelter, it took about the same number of faithful people from our congregation to accomplish this.  There were some “bumps in the road”, but we brought Christ to the homeless guests, and in our midst,  Christ was there!  THANK YOU!  YOU’RE WELCOME!

PLEASE SAVE THE FEBRUARY DATES:   FEBRUARY 19 AND 20, 2019.  A NEW SIGN UP SHEET WILL BE PLACED IN THE NARTHEX BY THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY.

AMAZON SMILE
Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to Woodridge United Methodist Church whenever you shop on AmazonSmile.
AmazonSmile is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service.  Support WUMC by starting your shopping
