WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"First Impressions"

This passage in Mark (12:28-44) has a scribe (of all people) being impressed by what Jesus is saying and doing!  Imagine that!  Maybe it was the first time he had encountered Jesus or been in his company.  Makes one think about the words I heard so often in my life that "first impressions make lasting impressions".

The sign outside our building says "love God and love your neighbors".  Inside our sanctuary is a banner that says the same.  Our welcoming statement says so too.  But how do others recognize that these are not just words on a signboard, a banner or a piece of paper?  After all, this is the first and most important commandment according to Jesus!!  What kind of impressions are we making to others?  If we take seriously the most important commandment, do others see that we love God with all that we are and our neighbors as well?

Whether we are in the church building or being the church in the world our FIRST IMPRESSIONS are the ones that make a difference to people and to the world.  Let's see how we can make some good FIRST IMPRESSIONS!!!

COVID-19 is changing our worship services for the next couple of weeks.  We will not gather in person on Sunday but we invite you to join us on our YouTube channel at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday! Let us be together in Spirit!!!!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE & THE GOSPEL OF JOHN -  ON ZOOM

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, March 24th:
-Gospel of John, chapters 19-20, including any notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:

-How do the accusations against Jesus change over time? Why do you think that is?

-What descriptions of Jesus’ trial stand out the most for you?

-In what ways to the details of Jesus’ death echo themes and stories from Jesus’ life in the gospel of John?

-Mary Magdalene is, according to John’s gospel, the first Easter preacher. Why has it taken the church so long to “allow” women to preach?

Also, a gentle reminder that using a study bible really helps. “Study bible” simply means a bible that includes introductions, notes, footnotes, and other helps for understanding the text. Study bibles come in just about every version (e.g. NRSV, NIV, CEV, etc.) If you don’t have a study bible, please borrow one from church. Just let us know you need one and we will find one for you to use.

Outreach Opportunities

Outreach Committee presents Hands On Lent and Beyond!
When we first suggested this project would include "surprises along the way,” this is not what we had in mind! Yet, here we are. And we are still extending our worship through our outreach…just in adjusted ways.
On March 15th we blessed the first batch of our Offering of Letters. This Sunday we will bless the next batch. We have over 50 letters so far — thank you! And it is not too late to write more.

Our sister church, Trinity UMC in Joliet still needs Easter baskets, so we are still safely gathering those items.

While we don’t know what April and May will bring, we intend to still collect items for Bucket Brigade and Snack Attack. But if we cannot serve in those ways, we are confident we will find way other methods for sharing the love of Jesus with our neighbors

EASTER HAMS
We are collecting hams for Easter to donate to our sister church, Trinity UMC, in Joliet. Please have the hams in the church kitchen by Sunday, April 5, 2020. For more information, see our display in the Narthex or call Bob Copeland (847.910.8663).  Thank you!

Items for Easter Baskets Needed
The Outreach committee is collecting items (Small toys, Individually wrapped candy, Baskets & Easter grass) to assemble Easter baskets for our sister church, Trinity UMC in Joliet.  Donations go in the tote in the Narthex by Friday, April 3 or contact Bob Copeland. Thank you!

DUPAGE PADS
A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped support our PADS efforts on February 18th and 19th. If you cannot bring the food donations or fulfill your time commitment you have signed up for, please contact Larry Cash so other arrangements can be made.

THANK YOU for your support of this important ministry!
