WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

The Reckless Love of God

On June 22nd, 14 youth and adults left behind the comfort of their homes, their families, their friends, and their routines to spend the week sleeping on a floor, with almost no control over when they eat, shower, work, and rest. And that is easily the least impressive part of our week.

God's Holy Spirit is at work in and through the people of Long Island as the recovery from SuperStorm Sandy continues. We simply had the privilege of being a small piece of what is already happening there. We got to meet, talk with, and help some extraordinary people and organizations.
How did we see God at work?
Who did we meet and why were we so moved by their stories?
What is so special about Long Island?
In order to hear our reflections on these questions and our other experiences from our mission trip, you need to be in worship this Sunday, July 7th when the youth and adults proclaim their message, “The Reckless Love of God."

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ï‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.

Dining Out in July with Pastor Danita
A few weeks ago in response to the preaching of our pastors, some of us gathered for a meal in places that were "different" for us (pushing us beyond our comfort zones).
This week, on Wednesday, July 10th from 5 pm to 7 pm  we will gather at Los Arcos, 7451 Woodward Ave #105, Woodridge, IL 60517  for Mexican food.  Los Arcos is located just north of the Mobil gas station on Woodward and 75th Streets.  It would be helpful to let Pastor Danita know if you will be joining us but it is not mandatory.   Let's have a good time and try something new!!

Friendship UMC Movie Nights
In order to foster conversation & education, Friendship UMC invites you to watch 2 movies that highlight some of the social issues facing churches today.  Stay for a short discussion following the feature.  Older youth are also welcome. Safe space guaranteed!  Let’s talk!

“Fish Out of Water” - July 17th & 19th at 7pm
This documentary tackles the 7 bible passages used to discriminate against marriage equality with humor and animation.

“An Act of Love” - July 31st & August 2nd at 7pm
In 2013, a pastor of the UMC was put on trial for officiating his son’s same sex wedding.  This documentary chronicles the family’s struggle & the movement for LGBTQ equality in the Methodist church.

Update for Suites for Success
Thank you to all clothes donors & monetary contributors.  A special thanks goes out to the participating dry cleaners of the Illinois Professional Dry Cleaners & Launders Assn. These participants have cleaned 16,000 clothes in the past two & a half years.
We have delivered over 32,000 clothes to the Illinois State prisons in Illinois.  No longer are we using our volunteer’s vehicles, but we are renting a truck and taking over 2000 clothes at a time.  Each year we have more than doubled our deliveries.
The dry cleaners have donated in excess of $90,000 at their cost of materials, labor & equipment. They can no longer afford to do this for free & are asking that 50% of their costs be covered by ‘Suits”. If trends continue, we will have to find a storage facility to hold clothes collected between deliveries.  Please, if you can, even though you have been more than generous, would you make a donation for our efforts? Thank you all, - The “Suits for Success team”
