WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Sacred Connections

This is the 3rd and final week of our short series on the "Gospel According to Dr. Seuss".  We have found that this famous writer of children's books has a lot to say about our faith journey and the world we live in as we view  through the lens of The Lorax.    (Be sure to take note of the Truffula trees in the sanctuary!!!)

So what does this "children's book" have to say to us that we haven't already heard.  When The Lorax was first published in 1971, it was banned in some school districts because of its message.  This message of environmental care and concern is one that was not welcomed in the not so distant past and still frowned upon today.

It has nothing to do with church so why do we have to talk about it here? Can't we just keep church stuff separate from stuff in the world?  Well, we will talk about those SACRED CONNECTIONS that we have and why The Lorax belongs in church!  Join me and see if we can't sort it out together.

Also on Sunday we will have our regular 5th Sunday Hymn Sing along time and then when we are done, we will have ice cream.  Bring your favorite topping and we will enjoy one of the best treats in the world -- ICE CREAM!!!

ALL are welcome at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ï‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.

Prayers

Please Pray for Our Mission Trip Team
WUMC’s team of 14 people are in Long Island, NY where they are part of the ongoing, long-term efforts to rebuild from Superstorm Sandy — especially for families for whom the initial response was not enough. Our team is serving through remodeling jobs such as flooring, drywall, painting, siding, and roofing. Our partnering organization is Next Step Ministries. This is our first year with Next Step, who come highly recommended by our District Superintendent. Next Step is working hard to eliminate the harms done by short-term mission work by adding long-term development with the communities they are in.

The team will share about their work and their reflections upon that work in both worship services at WUMC on July 7th. In the meantime, please pray for the team.

Upper Room Devotionals
Do you enjoy seasonal devotionals?  Did you know that we have Upper Room Magazines (a bimonthly devotional) are always available for purchase in the narthex?  They are located next to the prayer request mailbox by the bulletin boards.  Large print booklets are $1.50 and the smaller booklets are $1.00.  Please place your donations in the labeled box next to the display.

Prayers for Children at the Border
Bishop Dyck shares deep concern for migrant children who according to recent news reports are being housed under unsanitary and unsafe conditions at the U.S.-Mexico border.

"This is not who we are as Americans and people of faith to leave children unfed, lying on floors, living in filthy conditions, and unsupervised," said Bishop Dyck.

This Sunday, June 30, Global Ministries encourages congregations to take part in "A Sunday of Solidarity for Suffering Children" in three ways: 1) pray, 2) act, and 3) give. Click here for more information, a special prayer for churches to use during worship, and more resources. Download the pdf.

Update for Suites for Success (June 2019)
Thank you to all clothes donors & monetary contributors.  A special thanks goes out to the participating dry cleaners of the Illinois Professional Dry Cleaners & Launders Assn. These participants have cleaned 16,000 clothes in the past two & a half years.
We have delivered over 32,000 clothes to the Illinois State prisons in Illinois.  No longer are we using our volunteer’s vehicles, but we are renting a truck and taking over 2000 clothes at a time.  Each year we have more than doubled our deliveries.
The dry cleaners have donated in excess of $90,000 at their cost of materials, labor & equipment. They can no longer afford to do this for free & are asking that 50% of their costs be covered by ‘Suits”. If trends continue, we will have to find a storage facility to hold clothes collected between deliveries.  Please, if you can, even though you have been more than generous, would you make a donation for our efforts? Thank you all, - The “Suits for Success team”
