Where Do We Go From Here?

For the next couple of weeks we will be looking at the theme of the Gospel According to Dr. Seuss.  Yes, the famous writer of children's books that have changed reading for decades.  Hopefully, you will take this journey with us and read with new eyes some of the interesting themes we will discover.

Our first week will focus on the book "Oh The Places You Will Go" and talk about "WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?".  As we embark on another year as pastor and congregation, we should have some direction about some things.  As our beloved United Methodist denomination struggles with who she will be, we need to be clear about who WE will be.

Lots to think about and talk about!!  Join us on Sunday at 9 or 10:30 as we try to get some direction.  ALL are welcome.  Look for you on Sunday!!!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog

Back in January and February, we used a bunch of pixels on this blog on the lead up to the Special General Conference. (Connect to the 6-part series here.) Admittedly, after all that happened in St. Louis, it took a while to post reactions here. Like most of you, I was stunned, saddened, and angry. I just couldn't believe -- or at least didn't want to believe -- that the denomination we love could be so cruel. But the naked truth is that passing the "Traditional" Plan* actually increases the UMC's discrimination against, and harm of, LGBTQ persons.

Our Northern Illinois Conference's (NIC) Annual Conference (AC) met the first week of June.  What -- if anything -- did our Annual Conference do to resist the "Traditional" Plan?  Read on here....

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS
Summer Office Hours are now in effect.  Please call the church office first if you are planning on coming in.

The church office is CLOSED on Monday, June 17th and Tuesday, June 18th.  It will re-open on Wednesday, June 19th.

Sunday, June 30th is a fifth Sunday.  There is ONE Worship Service at 10am that day with fellowship to follow.

THANK YOU, LISA DOMER
Our congregation benefits from many people willing to do a lot of work behind the scenes. None more so than Lisa Domer. For 18 years, Lisa has been our Nursery Director providing excellent, reliable, nurturing care for all the babies and toddlers in our nursery. For 18 years, parents of our littlest ones have confidently left their children in our nursery because of Lisa provided consistent care of the highest quality. Sunday is Lisa’s last day as our Nursery Director. Please join in as we say THANK YOU, LISA! God’s blessings on your new job and all that is next for you!
Jorie Manderfield will serve as interim Nursery Director.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUT MISSION TRIP TEAM
Next week, WUMC’s team of 14 people will head to Long Island, NY where they will be part of the ongoing, long-term efforts to rebuild from Superstorm Sandy — especially for families for whom the initial response was not enough. Our team will serve through remodeling jobs such as flooring, drywall, painting, siding, and roofing; as well as partnering with local food pantries meeting residents’ every day needs. The team will share about their work and their reflections upon that work in both worship services at WUMC on July 7th. In the meantime, please pray for the team.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ď‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.
