WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

God of the Outsider

Last week was fun!!  Making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches always brings back memories of all kinds.  It served as a reminder to us that there is no one perfect way to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and that for just as many ways as there are to make a PB&J, there are that many kinds of people in the world.

This week is pretty much a part 2 of last week.  While there are all kinds of people in the world, the same God that loves and cares for each of us, loves and cares for each of "them".  The persons that we mislabel as "outsiders" are the very ones that God loves and the ones that God expects us to love!!  Because if we are honest, we also used to be "outsiders".  THE GOD OF THE OUTSIDER reminds us daily that our task is to make sure that there are fewer and fewer persons who feel like "outsiders" and more who know and experience the love of the God who loves us all.  Join us on Sunday at 9 or 10:30 a.m. as we talk about it a little more.  ALL are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog

THE FUTURE IS STILL UNWRITTEN

We are now three months removed from the fateful and frightening results of the Special Session of the General Conference. And it has now been almost one month since the Judicial Council ruling on the constitutionality (according to the UMC Book of Disciple) of the terrible "Traditionalist" Plan.

What's happened since? Quite a bit, it turns out. Read more here.

The church office will be CLOSED on Monday, May 27th in honor of Memorial Day.

Graduate Recognition Sunday is Sunday, June 9th at both services.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ļ‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE CONTINUES ON TUESDAYS
Our desire to explore and attempt to better understand our sacred text is nigh inextinguishable. That’s why we’re calling our ongoing bible study, “The Bible for Curious People.” The class meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am through May 28th.

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading. Having a study bible really helps. We have some available to borrow, just ask!

Reading assignment for May 28th:
ā—¸ Continuing our exploration of lesser known books of the New Testament, read Philemon and Jude, both of which are just a single chapter.
ā—¸ The introduction to each book and any other notes your study bible provides.

Questions to consider:
    What questions does this text raise in you?
    Who is God according to this text and how do we respond to that vision?
    In your reading of it, does Philemon seem to be against slavery, for slavery, or neutral on slavery? (Historically, all three positions have been argued.)
    In USAmerican history, Philemon was used to justify slavery and the Fugitive Slave Law, both obviously objectively odious. How would you respond to such usage?
    Jude warns against false teachers. What false teachers have you encountered? How did you identify them as false? Did you know it at the time or not until later?
