WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

More Than Just 31 Flavors

Last week we talked about having grilled fish and bread for breakfast.  So in keeping with this "foodie theme", this week we are making ice cream sundaes during the sermon!!  Well maybe not ice cream sundaes (that would be really messy by the time the sermon comes around)!!!  But we will make peanut butter sandwiches.  How many ways can you make an ice cream sundae (or in our case) a peanut butter sandwich?  Are there "acceptable" ways to make the sandwich and "unacceptable" ways?

Similar to our lives as Christians.  Some people only see the world in "black or white"....there has to be detail to document the thought and never is there a question about it.  There is no "gray" area for a difference in thought or opinion.  A large part of society uses this thought process for far too many things!!!!  There is no room for tradition and experience in the formation of faith and belief.  WRONG!!!!  That's why as United Methodists our faith formation includes scripture, experience, tradition and reason.

So making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich the "right" way may differ from person to person.  As one writer puts it..."It is time for us to learn to like and love the different flavors and tastes laid out in the banquet that is the human family."

We will take a look at yet another "Peter experience" in the 10th chapter of Acts and talk about "MORE THAN JUST 31 FLAVORS".  Bring your favorite ingredient for your peanut butter and jelly sandwich on Sunday.  Join us at 9 or 10:30 a.m..  ALL are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ď‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE CONTINUES ON TUESDAYS
Our desire to explore and attempt to better understand our sacred text is nigh inextinguishable. That’s why we’re calling our ongoing bible study, “The Bible for Curious People.” The class meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am through May 28th.

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading. Having a study bible really helps. We have some available to borrow, just ask!

Reading assignment for May 21st:
â—Ź  We switch our attention to the New Testament, reading the book of James.
â—Ź  The introduction to the book and any other notes your study bible provides.

Questions to consider:
    What questions does this text raise in you?
    Who is God according to this text and how do we respond to that vision?
    What is wisdom according to James?
    What challenges to our contemporary church does James raise?
    In what ways does the church (in general) “favor the rich and mock the poor”?
    How can we change that?
