Making Breakfast, Leaving Legacies

How will you be remembered?

How will we — the congregation of Woodridge United Methodist Church — be remembered?

To paraphrase the world’s biggest, best musical: “Who tells our story? Will they tell our story?”

Granted, these type of questions tend to get asked after a death — and WUMC is not dead or dying! But a little introspection is good for the soul:

•    Who do we want to be?

•    In what ways are we living up to who we want to be?

•    In what ways are we not? How might we change those ways?

To answer those questions, perhaps we can take a cue from this week’s gospel lesson from John 21. It’s another delightfully weird story that also manages to be poignant and insightful…even in the context of fixing and sharing a meal.

Identity, story, death, resurrection, impact, and moms: that’s a lot of strings, but Pastor Dave will attempt to pull them all together in his sermon, “Making Breakfast, Leaving Legacies,” this Sunday, May 12th.

WUMC worship services are Sunday mornings at 9:00am and 10:30am. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE CONTINUES ON TUESDAYS
Our desire to explore and attempt to better understand our sacred text is nigh inextinguishable. That’s why we’re calling our ongoing bible study, “The Bible for Curious People.” The class meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am through May 28th.

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading. Having a study bible really helps. We have some available to borrow, just ask!

Reading assignment for May 14th:
     - The Hebrew Scriptures book of the prophet Amos (it’s only 9 chapters!).
     - The introduction to the book and any other notes your study bible provides.

Questions to consider:
    What questions does this text raise in you?
    Who is God according to this text and how do we respond to that vision?
    Amos has been described as “an antidote to a feeble faith, a tonic for a rigid or repulsive religion, a cure for a church life gone vapid.” In what ways do we need to hear from Amos today?
    “Those who confront the state and its power will always be accused of conspiracy.” How might we learn from Amos’ witness to speak truth to power whenever injustice reigns?
