Doubting in Good Faith

We’re used to describing Thomas as the one disciple who struggled with believing Jesus could actually be resurrected. So much so that we likely know him best as “Doubting Thomas.” But, it turns out, he wasn’t alone. Jesus’ one post-Resurrection appearance in the gospel of Matthew gives us this:

            “The eleven disciples, having spoken to the Marys, headed to Galilee, to the mountain where they were to meet Jesus. When the disciples saw Jesus there, many of them fell down and worshiped, as Mary and the other Mary had done. But a few hung back. They were not sure.”

As Matthew’s story concludes, Jesus is certain but his followers are not. Isn’t that at least somewhat comforting? To know we aren’t the first followers to be unsure of how to respond to Jesus?

What are we to do when everyone around us seems certain about their faith but we’re not?

Where in the life of the community at Woodridge UMC do we have safe space to doubt, to question, to wonder, to disagree?

How might we best live into the “big tent” idea that has infused the Methodist movement since its inception?

Pastor Dave will wrestle with these ideas and more this Sunday, April 28th, in his sermon, “Doubting in Good Faith.” All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Prayer Request

Prayers for Judicial Council
The Council of Bishops is inviting the people of The United Methodist Church to be in prayer for the Judicial Council, which was in session this week in Evanston. The Judicial Council is discussing the constitutionality of matters related to the Special Session of the General Conference held in February.

We lift these elected members of the Judicial Council in prayer, as the events of this week help us to take the next step as people who seek to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God (Micah 6. 8)," Bishop Ken Carter, President of the Council of Bishops, said in a letter.

No oral hearings were scheduled, and the court's rulings will be posted on its website at some point after the session concludes.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE CONTINUES ON TUESDAYS
Our desire to explore and attempt to better understand our sacred text is nigh inextinguishable. That’s why we’re calling our ongoing bible study, “The Bible for Curious People.” The class meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am through May 28th.

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading. Having a study bible really helps. We have some available to borrow, just ask!

Reading assignment for April 30th:
-Whatever introduction to the book your bible provides.
-Joshua chapters 10-19, including any notes your bible provides.

What questions does this text raise in you?
What are we to make of all the violence?
Who is God according to this text and how do we respond to that vision?

Saturday, May 11 marks the 27th anniversary of one of America's great days of giving - the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in Woodridge/Downers Grove who need help. Participating in this year's Letter Carrier Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is simple. Just leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11 and your letter carrier will do the rest. Please consider helping in their fight to end hunger, as they celebrate their 27th anniversary year in America's great day of giving.
