Forgiving Calculus

The (church) season of Lent is upon us. Which usually takes us in one of two directions:

1)    Are you giving up chocolate or social media? Or just something you already don’t like such as beets?

2)    Are you adding more to your daily routine? More prayer or more scripture reading?

[Insert optometrist voice] Do you feel more guilt with number 1 or number 2?

For too many of us, the season of Lent too often ends up being a time when we’re made to feel (more) guilt about all that we have left undone. It’s almost as if Lent is a time for all our abandoned New Year’s resolutions to come back with a vengeance.

Frankly, this week’s gospel lesson from Matthew 18 doesn’t help with that. Who haven’t I forgiven that I need to? How many times have I been the ungrateful one? Gee, thanks for pointing out all my failures, Jesus.

But what if there is way more going on here than that?

What if all these stories are even more connected than we ever imagined?

What if Jesus isn’t trying to make us feel miserable, but instead is helping us to see the world in a whole new — albeit inverted and disorienting — way?

And why does that parable have to be so dang disturbing?

With a return visit to Parable Club, Pastor Dave will wrestle with those ideas and more this Sunday, March 10th, in his sermon, “Forgiving Calculus.”

WUMC worship services are Sunday mornings at 9:00am and 10:30am. All are welcome!

Be part of the discussion at our worship gatherings on Sundays at 9:00 & 10:30 a.m.
All are welcome!

During General Conference 2019 in St. Louis, United Methodist delegates from around the world worshiped together, discussed complex issues and passed legislation regarding same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ+ clergy. Delegates also adopted legislation allowing a "gracious exit" for congregations wishing to leave the denomination. But on March 6, the Council of Bishops filed a request for a declaratory decision from the Judicial Council on the constitutionality of that disaffiliation petition. Click here for the press release.

"Sticks in a Bundle Cannot be Broken"
---East African Proverb
A true demonstration of this proverb was witnessed as our WUMC congregation, friends and family served over 60 homeless guests at PADS on Tuesday, February 19 through Wednesday, February 20, 2019.  WE JOINED TOGETHER AND MADE A DIFFERENCE!!!  THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED FOOD OR SERVED.  Our next, and last, service dates for this season are:  APRIL 16 – 17, 2019.

The mitten tree is available in the Narthex to accept your donations of children’s mittens, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The donations are going to Woodridge School District 68. They give them out to children who don’t have appropriate gear for the winter weather. We’ll be harvesting the tree a couple of times. Please donate as you can.
