The Net Worth of a Church

We live in a society where value is placed on a person or thing based on their "net worth".  How much you have accumulated in tangible assets even becomes the measuring stick for your self-worth.  Business are considered to be successful based on their "bottom lines".  Even professional athletes are considered better team members based on their "net worth".

Unfortunately this type of thinking spills over into the church.  The church with more members or a "higher bottom line" are considered to be more fruitful congregations, when in fact that may not always be the case.  Where is the real ministry taking place?  Are persons really encountering the presence of the Christ or learning and growing as disciples?  Maybe we need to take a different approach and look at our "net worth" from a different perspective.  What is the real "NET WORTH OF A CHURCH"?  And who determines what factors go into that equation?

In the Gospel according to Luke we are invited to take a different approach and look with fresh eyes.  Join us on Sunday as we look at what those factors are and why we might need to take a different approach at how we determine our "net worth".  We invite you to be here at 9 or 10:30.  ALL are welcome!

Be part of the discussion at our worship gatherings on Sundays at 9:00 & 10:30 a.m.
All are welcome!

#GC2019 Primer no.6

This is the sixth in a multi-week series to help us be informed about -- and prepared for -- the Special Session of the General Conference (aka #GC2019) to be held February 23-26, 2019 in Saint Louis, MO.

As #GC2019 looms large over our entire denomination, it is easy to get completely caught up in all the rhetoric and speculation — including and maybe especially, all the-sky-is-falling screaming — surrounding this General Conference. The Reverend Dr. B. Kevin Smalls (one of Pastor Danita’s friends) offers some much needed perspectiveRead on here.

2nd Appeal to Cover Shortfall

Thank you to the ten who have already responded to the 2nd Appeal to cover the shortfall. If you have not returned your response, it is critical that you do so as soon as possible since there is a finance meeting on Thursday, February 21st, to develop what needs to be done. There are forms provided here for your convenience. You may also email your response. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter

HELP NEEDED

We have a bulletin board in the hallway that has been maintained by Marilyn Lawrence for many years.  The theme for the board has generally been seasonal (sometimes integrating the church seasons as well) and sometimes has included her own artwork.  However, because of Marilyn's failing health, she will no longer be able to maintain it.  We are in need of someone to take on this task.  If you are interested, please contact Becky Jeske in the church's office and let us know.  She can be reached at (630) 968-6050 or via email.  Thanks for your help.

WHAT IS TH SPECIAL SESSION of the GENERAL CONFERENCE (#GC2019) and WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Answering those questions is important but takes us rather deep in the weeds, so apologies for multitudinous UMC geekery. The shortest answer is: #GC2019 matters because the future of our denomination is at stake.

Here’s a summary with a little more information:
The Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church is February 23th-26th in St. Louis, MO. The purpose is to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward based on the recommendations of the Council of Bishops. The Commission was authorized to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options to strengthen church unity.

Pastor Dave is writing a series of posts unpacking all that terminology and offering resources for understanding what could happen at #GC2019 and how it could affect WUMC. This week was number five in the series. Access them on Pastor Dave’s
blog on our church website:

How did the bible come to be in the form we have?
Why are there so many different versions and translations in English?
What is the overall story of the “Old Testament”?

These are some of the questions we will explore together Tuesday mornings from 10:30am-12:00noon. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along. All are welcome. Classes start this week, Tuesday January 15th.

ASSIGNMENT For February 19th
Read your bible’s introduction to both Wisdom literature in general and the book of Job in particular. Then read Job chapters 1-31, paying attention to any notes your bible provides. This gets us through the beginning of Job’s story and the three rounds of debate he has with his friends.

    • What do these chapters seem to you to be saying about the nature of suffering?
    • What are they saying about how we respond to suffering — both in our own lives and in others’ lives?
    • How do Job and his friends change throughout their rounds of debate?
    • What do these chapters seem to you to be saying about who God is and how God acts?
