An Undisputed Truth

As we travel the road together in this new year in the life of Jesus, we get to the message Jesus shares with His followers.  This UNDISPUTED TRUTH shared with the disciples is a reminder of what is important to remember in our lives....we are blessed in all stations of our lives.

Reality says that sometimes we don't really feel that way though.  We tend to look at our current state of affairs, not remembering the blessings of our entire lives.....past the portion that is troubling or hard or heartbreaking.  The UNDISPUTED TRUTH says....not so!  There is more to look at and compare it to.  See that part as well.

Join us on Sunday as we take a look at the specifics a little closer.  ALL are welcome at 9 and 10:30 a.m..  Hope to see you then!

Be part of the discussion at our worship gatherings on Sundays at 9:00 & 10:30 a.m.
All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Final Hours to Order Youth Pizzas
As a way to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves, each summer we send a team of youth (and adult leaders) somewhere in USAmerica to partner with an organization doing good work to help people in need. Sometimes the work we do is manual labor like painting or roofing a house. Sometimes it is providing social services like helping at a nursing home or domestic violence shelter. Last year we were in Baton Rogue repair homes for families still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

This year, we are heading to Long Island, NY to help repair houses and community structures still dealing with aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy.

Ordering pizzas helps us do that. Funds from WUMC Youth Ministries’ Pizza Sale help offset the cost of the mission trip. So just by ordering a few pizzas you can help WUMC youth help others! And you get a tasty pizza in return! But all pizza orders are due Sunday, January 27th. You can find a form here.

To place your order: Go to the pizza display in the Narthex OR simply email your order to Youth Council Chairperson Troy Smith troyandkaren1@comcast.net
$6 for cheese pizza
$7 for sausage or pepperoni
$8 for sausage and pepperoni

#GC2019 Primer no.3

This is the third in a multi-week series to help us be informed about -- and prepared for -- the Special Session of the General Conference to be held February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis (aka #GC2019).

We are now just four weeks away from #GC2019. Let's take a little closer look at the three main plans: the One Church Plan, the Connectional Conference Plan, and the Traditionalist Plan (which I think is more accurately labeled the "Traditionalist" Plan*).

The one main proposal from the Commission on a Way Forward is the One Church Plan. One Church Plan makes no changes to structure of the UMC, i.e., no new division of the UMC's Annual or Central Conferences. The One Church Plan eliminates all the expensive, embarrassing, and destructive church trials by:

Caring for Our College Students
We have been trying to collect the addresses for our students who are away in college in order to be in touch with them.  We invite you to join us in our efforts.  The names and addresses that we have are in the narthex.  Take a name and be in touch with that student, especially around Valentine's day.  Need ideas?  Go to your Amazon Smile account and search for "college care packages" or go to collegebox.com.  I am sure they will appreciate whatever you choose to do.  We want our students to know that they are being thought of and certainly prayed for as they pursue their higher education.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know
Let's begin the year off in the right way!!!  Starting in January we will start a new series in our Wednesday night Bible study class and on Sunday mornings based on the book by Adam Hamilton entitled CREED, What Christians Believe and Why.  We will be offering this as an option for persons who are interested in becoming members of the church as well as everyone else who wants to learn more about what we believe as United Methodists.

JUST HAVE QUESTIONS:  We will try to answer them as best we can.
INTERESTED IN MEMBERSHIP:  Here is your opportunity in a non-threatening way.
WANT TO KNOW WHAT UNITED METHODISTS BELIEVE:  We will try to share that information as well.

A sign-up sheet is available in the narthex.  Join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. (dinner with the youth starts around 6:30) and on Sunday mornings in January.

The Bible for Curious People - a Tuesday Morning Study

How did the bible come to be in the form we have?
Why are there so many different versions and translations in English?
What is the overall story of the “Old Testament”?

These are some of the questions we will explore together Tuesday mornings from 10:30am-12:00noon. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along. All are welcome. Classes start this week, Tuesday January 15th.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK 3 (JANUARY 29th)
1) Read your bible’s introduction to Genesis. What does it say about when and why Genesis was written?

2) Read Genesis Chapters 1 and 2. Listen for the poetry. But also make use of any notes in your study bible. How do the two accounts differ? How do they compliment each other?
Try to step past this as a story of how the world began and consider what the stories say about why God created and how we are supposed to live in the world?
What are we doing to be good stewards of all creation? How might we improve in that role?

3) As a way of comparison, please also read the Babylonian creation epic, Enuma Elish. It influenced the writers of Genesis — and inspired them to evolve their understanding of God.
Here is a source that offers a summary of the tale and commentary on it as well as the text itself:

Here is an alternative summary of and commentary on the epic:

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19 THROUGH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2019

Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS) is one of our Church’s most important local missions.  We are committed to serving the homeless guests at the Downers Grove First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Avenue, on the third Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning for the months of October, December, February and April.

In December, we experienced an increase in the number of guests at the shelter, and with the current frigid temperatures, we are anticipating the same.
