WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Mary Had A Baby (Part 2) "Watching, Waiting, and Wondering"

This Sunday is the second week of Advent in this new Christian year!!!  Last week we introduced you to our Advent series entitled "MARY HAD A BABY" based on the book by Cheryl Kirk-Duggan and Marilyn E. Thornton.  (Note:  we are using this same book in our Tuesday and Wednesday Bible study classes and there are a few copies left in the narthex.)  Each week we will hear a different spiritual done in a variety of formats by different people/groups.

This week's spiritual "RISE UP SHEPHERD AND FOLLOW" is more of a sing along arrangement.  You are invited to do just that....SING ALONG!!!

It may sound as though we are getting a little "ahead of the game" with this spiritual and focus, but truly we are not.  During this season of Advent we are invited to follow the journey to Bethlehem and beyond.  What does it mean for us to "join the journey"?  How are we to approach the season of preparation and anticipation with attitudes that are "WATCHING, WAITING AND WONDERING"?    Does this mean that we sit idly by with our hands crossed staring into the atmosphere?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  But let's see what it is we are really to be doing.  Let's try to answer some of these questions on Sunday.  Join us at 9 and 10:30 a.m..  ALL are welcome.

Be part of the discussion at our summer worship gathering on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

PASTOR DAVE'S BLOG

An arresting thought

"Some things are worth losing for."
I was driving, listening to a podcast (my current preferred in-car entertainment) when I heard that statement. It was arresting. Like, literally. I was so struck by that thought that I had to pull over to process it for a moment.

"Some things are worth losing for."

Ta-Nehisi Coates, one of my favorite authors, said that in a conversation with Chris Hayes. With the 2019 Special General Conference* just two months away, those words loom ever larger.

CIRCLES OF BLESSINGS
SERVING THE HOMELESS AT PADS
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18TH THROUGH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19TH, 2018
As we celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends, family and congregation, we remember and are grateful for the many, many blessings and gifts that God showers upon us each day.  His Grace prompts us to be in relationship with the disadvantaged of our communities by willingly sharing our time, talents and money.  We have an opportunity to do this as we serve the homeless shelter at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, 1032 Maple Avenue, on Tuesday afternoon, December 18th through Wednesday morning, December 19th.

Some members of our congregation who served in October are not able to serve in December.  PLEASE VISIT THE SIGN-UP BOARD IN THE NARTHEX TO VOLUNTEER OR RECONFIRM YOUR COMMITMENT TO SERVE.  We particularly need more people to serve during the dinner hour & some food donations.  WE CAN USE HELP IN ALL AREAS!!

COMPLETE THE CIRCLE OF BLESSINGS THIS ADVENT SEASON BY SERVING THE HOMELESS AT PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter in DuPage County).

WOMEN'S FIESTA

PHOTOS NEEDED

We would like to decorate our newly named rooms. Please send copies of any photos of Trinity Church in Joliet or of Jack Sipley to the office so that we might make a display. (We will return your originals).    Thank you to those that have already sent us photos.  We are still in need of pictures for the remaining rooms.

STAFF AND OFFICE WISH LIST
From time to time our office finds that there are items needed that are a bit more expensive than a case of paper or sometimes for special needs that occur. Currently, our list includes the following:
●    4 new dry erase/whiteboards approximately $230 each;
●    Funding to update the youth room which includes the purchase of 6 hightop chairs/stools, 4 ottomans with removable tops and storage and a coat of paint for the walls;
●    Funding to update the Friendship Room (den/parlor) for carpet and furniture cleaning and new paint for the walls;
●    Updated shelving units for the Christian Education office
While we know that you would love to run out and go shopping, our staff has looked at and chosen very specific items with the best deals!  If you would like to help in this effort, please mark your check "staff/office wish list" and make it payable to the church.  No amount is too small.  PLEASE DO NOT GO OUT AND PURCHASE THE ABOVE ITEMS ON YOUR OWN WITHOUT CONTACTING A STAFFPERSON!!!  We appreciate your support of us and are constantly looking at ways to make our daily work environment better!!  We invite you to join us in this effort.

CHRISTMAS FOOD BOXES AND HAMS FOR TRINITY UMC
Sign-up in the Narthex to donate food boxes and hams for families at our sister church, Trinity United Methodist in Joliet.  Your donation provides a great holiday meal for a family who would otherwise do without.  Pick up a list of items to include in each food box at the sign-up display in the Narthex.  Hams and food boxes are due back in the church kitchen by noon Friday, December 21.

THE MITTEN TREE IS CALLING FOR YOUR DONATIONS

The mitten tree is available in the Narthex to accept your donations of children’s mittens, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The donations are going to Woodridge School District 68. They give them out to children who don’t have appropriate gear for the winter weather. We’ll be harvesting the tree a couple of times. Please donate as you can.
