WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Just Follow the Instructions"

This Sunday we will observe ALL SAINTS' SUNDAY where we remember the lives of those who have joined the Church Triumphant over the past year.  As persons come forward to receive communion, they will be invited to light a candle in memory of loved ones whose lives they celebrate.  While it sounds rather sullen and sad, it is intended to be a reflective time to remember the great impact others have had in our lives, to celebrate their existence and the memories shared.

Also as a part of our worship, we will recognize the newer members of our congregation who have joined us from other United Methodist Churches.  These transfers of membership have come to us as a result of persons moving to a new area and the closing of 2 other United Methodist Churches in our area.  We have been the recipient of items from both of those houses of worship as well.

So, as we reflect on the lives of our loved ones, the new "spirits" that have joined us in our ministry, we will also take a look at a passage from 2 Kings.  The story is about a man who has a terrible skin disease and asks to go to rival country to be healed of the skin disease.  However, upon his arrival he is given instructions from someone else and takes great offense at not being seen by the person he expected to see.  Instead of following the instructions given to him, he goes away angry and almost misses out on a life-changing opportunity.  It's possible that some of us have almost missed an opportunity because we thought we had a "better" answer/solution to a dilemma we were faced with.  If we had listened to our conscience and "JUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS"  in the first place...!!!  Let's talk about some of those experiences on Sunday and see if we can't come up with a better way of handling those tough spots in life.

Join us on Sunday at 9 or 10:30 a.m. for worship.  ALL ARE WELCOME!!!!

Be part of the discussion at our summer worship gathering on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog

In last Sunday's sermon, I shared a video to help us get an overview of the book of Kings. I find the storyboard style really engaging. Based on post-sermon feedback, it seems many others concur.

So I thought I'd make that video available here. We watched up until the 4:06 mark. But the rest of it is just as good. I've only just discovered The Bible Project, the producers of this video and a whole bunch more. I expect we'll use their videos again.

However, The Bible Project's mission makes me uneasy:

It is tradition in the United Methodist Church for 3rd graders to receive an engraved bible from the church. Please see Jorie Manderfield if you are interested in having your child receive a bible.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY AND BEYOND
On Sunday, October 7th, 2018 our congregation celebrated World Communion Sunday.  It is a day designated to remind us of our connection to other Christians around the world and across denominational spectrums.   The Worship Committee and pastors decided to take it a step further.  Within our congregation we have members who were born in places other than the United States.  And why not express that in a way that others can see!!??  So we have posted flags from Switzerland, Philippines, Myanmar (Burma), Sweden, and Peru.  While there are others, we thought we would start with these.  Welcome to a world wide congregation that celebrates world wide communion every week!!!

Cost is $5 per person. If you are attending for the first time, please arrive a few minutes early to sign a health waiver and meet the instructor. THANKSGIVING 2.0
One of the many great things about celebrating Thanksgiving is finding creative ways to enjoy all those delicious leftovers. Unless, of course, you count yourself among the group of people who find dealing with and eating leftovers…disagreeable. (Of all the issues that divide our country right now, this one is, thankfully, perhaps the most benign.)  Well, WUMC is here for both groups. On the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 25th, we’re trying something tried and true as well as something bold and new.
Want to worship that day as we usually do? The 9:00AM service is for you.
Want to try out a different approach? The 10:30AM service will offer just that.
How so? More on that soon, but for now know that the Nov. 25th 10:30AM service will include sharing a meal together.

ALL CHURCH CLEAN UP
Come out and help spruce up the outside of the church on Saturday November 10th at 9:00 am.  Bring work gloves, rakes and any of your favorite yard tools.  Once you are here, look around the property for a trustee to be assigned a job.

ADVENTURERS CHRISTMAS OUTING
Adventurers next outing will be on Saturday, December 8, to Community Christian Church, Yellow Box Location, 1635 Emerson Lane, Naperville, to see a 3:00 matinee presentation of Let It Be Christmas (The Gospel According to Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, George and Ringo). It is the Epic Theatre Company's original Beatles rock-opera nativity story told in two acts.  Tickets are $20 per person with a 10% discount when 10 or more tickets are purchased. More information is available on their website.   Please let Gwenn Edman know if you have any suggestions for dinner after the play.   Please RSVP at Gwenn by October 30 if you wish to attend.

SAVE THE DATE!!

Mark your calendars!  It’s official!  Our church conference date for 2018 is Saturday, December 8, 2018.  The Staff-Parish Committee will meet at 9:30 am and the church conference will begin at 10:00 am.  All reports from committee chairs are due November 8th.

"SOUP-ER" HIGHWAY
Small Miracles Preschool is collecting canned goods to donate to the West Suburban Community Pantry November 1st - 16th for those in need in our community.  The “Soup-er” Highway will run along the preschool hallway walls.  This year’s goal is 250 cans. Bring your cans  and set them by the doors to the preschool hallway.

THANKSGIVING FOOD BOXES AND TURKEYS FOR TRINITY UMC

Please sign-up in the Narthex to donate food boxes and turkeys for families at our sister church, Trinity United Methodist in Joliet.  Your donation provides a holiday meal for a family who would otherwise do without.  Pick up a list of items to include in each food box at the Outreach table in the Narthex.  Turkeys and food boxes are due back in the church kitchen by 5:00 Friday, November 16th.

THE MITTEN TREE IS CALLING FOR YOUR DONATIONS

The mitten tree is available in the Narthex to accept your donations of children’s mittens, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The donations are going to Woodridge School District 68. They give them out to children who don’t have appropriate gear for the winter weather. We’ll be harvesting the tree a couple of times with first harvest coming before Thanksgiving. Please donate as you can.

TEDDY BEARS NEEDED!

The West Suburban Community Pantry sets up a Christmas tree for the children of their clients.  On this tree, we hang teddy bears (or other stuffed animals) and small toys (individual toy cars, Yo-yos, Play-doh, etc…) and each child gets to pick one off of the tree.

If you would like to participate this Christmas season, please place a new, small, unwrapped teddy bear or small toy in the basket outside the main doors of the Sanctuary by Sunday, December 2, 2018.

As a volunteer intake clerk for the Pantry, I have the pleasure of seeing the children’s faces light up with pleasure when I tell them they can pick a toy off of the tree for themselves.  It is truly a joy to see and I thank you all in advance for your generosity!

Thank you!  Monica Copeland, (630) 728-5359.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR THE WEST SUBURBAN COMMUNITY PANTRY
Pantry clients that live in Woodridge qualify for a program that allow their children to get Christmas gifts from local congregations. However, there are 2 issues that that cause most of the pantry client children to be left out of this program.

1.    For Woodridge residents, entry into the program is by lottery and there is a long waiting list.
2.    The majority of pantry clients come from surrounding communities.

This year the Outreach committee has decided to serve this excluded group. Starting in December, the pantry starts giving donated toys to children ages 2 to 12 that aren’t getting gifts from local congregations. Until Sunday, December 2nd, we will be collecting unwrapped toys for boys and girls from 2 to 12 years old. Please place them in the designated box in the Narthex. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of these families. Please look into your heart and do what you can to brighten Christmas for these less fortunate children.

#GIVING TUESDAY IS NOVEMBER 27TH
After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a world-wide day of giving that celebrates philanthropy. Take action with us to help end homelessness in DuPage County by making a donation to DuPagePads on Tuesday, November 27th. Help us reach our fundraising goal of $25,000 to assist people in moving from a pad on the floor to a key in the door!!
